Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a full contact combat sport. Opponents are allowed to utilize a mixture of martial arts, traditional and non-traditional, when fighting. The only protection they wear includes mouth cards, a cup, and gloves. Many wear Everlast boxing gloves for padding and flexibility.
The rules allow striking and grappling while standing and on the ground.
Extreme fighting can be traced back to mixed style contests throughout Europe, Japan and the Pacific Rim in the early 1900`s. In Brazil, there were the Gracie family`s vale tudo martial arts tournaments starting in the 1920`s.
In Japan, there were Antonio Inoki hosed contests on the 1970`s. MMA fighting has emerged in American pop culture in 1993 with the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
This sport is popular on Pay Per View and rivals boxing and professional wrestling. The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) was soon created.
Mixed martial arts has also been called cage fighting, ultimate fighting, extreme fighting, and ultimate combat.
No matter what you call it, it is still the same thing. The King of the Cage is a MMA competition.
